Did Your Health Plan Just Become HSA-Eligible?

A provision in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) is opening the door to Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) for many more people. Previously, if you were enrolled in a Bronze or Catastrophic-level plan through the ACA marketplace, you weren't allowed to open or contribute to an HSA, even though these are often the most affordable plan options. That restriction has been removed, meaning individuals and families with these plans can now take advantage of HSAs.
This matters because HSAs offer a rare triple tax benefit: contributions go in pre-tax, the money grows tax-deferred, and withdrawals for qualified medical expenses are tax-free. Unused funds roll over year to year, and after age 65, the account can be used like a traditional IRA for any purpose. If you're on a Bronze or Catastrophic plan, this change gives you a new way to lower your taxable income while building savings for future medical costs, including Medicare premiums down the road.
HSAs are often overlooked from an investment standpoint. Most of the money in an HSA can be invested similarly to a 401(k). In 2026, the maximum contribution for family coverage is $8,750; the limit is $4,400 for an individual. Those 55+ can contribute an additional $1,000 catch-up contribution.
If you're enrolled in an ACA marketplace plan, it's worth checking whether your coverage now qualifies you for an HSA, and if so, how much you could contribute to reduce your tax bill and build long-term savings.
